Litter pollution in nature has become a global issue. The litter that ends up in rivers and oceans is especially problematic, as it not only destroys ecosystems but also impacts us humans by contaminating our food chain. In fact, 80% of the litter in the seas comes from land, so picking up litter is a crucial step in addressing pollution.

Pirika was secretly developed in 2011 by students at Kyoto University using university equipment. In the beginning, they were often laughed at—"Who would use such a service?"—but now, the app is used in 111 countries and has helped collect over 210 million pieces of litter.
